You Just Never Know, Part II

I recently wrote a piece about my older brother, the most avidly fit person in our family having a heart attack and being found dead on the floor of the ED where he worked. After being revived, he left the hospital five days later and has been recovering at home, where he lives alone.

This morning I opened an email from my former sister in law, who shared this news. For those of you who believe in miracles (or not), I felt uplifted and hope you will as well. “Took Joe to bring the Emergency Dept. and CCU staff some food and flowers Friday night. The ED staff began applauding as he came in.  For a few moments the entire place stood still. One of the residents took his picture because another of the residents on that night was off and she wanted to share how great he looks.

I just wanted to share with you what an incredibly moving moment it was. As nurses, we don’t often get to see the results of our work and that is especially true of the ED. This week was nurses week and it was so fitting to be able to thank them in such a meaningful way.”
