The historic Women’s Marches that took place all over our country last weekend were inspiring and thought-provoking to me personally. Looking at the photos and posts on Facebook, one sign grabbed my attention more than the rest. It read, “Make America Kind Again.” Wow. That’s my vision for what is possible for our country as we move forward from January 20, 2017.
For me, the question I’ve been asking myself is, “Who do I choose to be?” in the Trump era. There are many choices available to me. I can choose fear, contraction, blame, indifference, etc. These are understandable reactions, however, they are not reflecting my values or my true nature.
As a coach, I’ve been called forward to support many of my clients who are grieving their losses post-election. How I’ve chosen to support them is to listen with empathy, compassion, to embrace them with loving as they sort through their thoughts, feelings, and options. I hold for them while they choose back to themselves and who they truly are, instead of letting their reactions take over. This choice is available to all of us, no matter what goes on around us and who is sitting in the White House.
A well-loved quote by Viktor Frankl sums it up for me:
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms –
to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
I choose love. I choose service. I choose kindness. What do you choose?
