Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back; a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country. -Anais Nin
Obviously the term “leash” here is a metaphor for those things that hold you back. It could be something as simple as your job or your own fears. It’s so unfortunate that people spend so much of their lives living in fear of what truly are insignificant things. Fortunately, most of the things we fear never come to pass. So, what are some of your fears that keep you from living your dreams?
Let’s start by thinking about your fantasies first. Have you fantasized about living in sunny Spain and meeting the love of your life? Perhaps you’ve dreamt about refurbishing a 200 year old farm house in the French countryside. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a travel writer so you could pay as you go. Great! Stop right here and take a piece of paper out and write down all the things you would love to see, do, be, etc. Come on, do it now – this is your life we’re talking about.
So, what would have to happen in order for you to turn your fantasies into reality? Would you have to quit your job or perhaps put in for a sabbatical? What are you afraid of? That your job might not be there when you return from your sabbatical? That quitting your job is permanent? Perhaps your worry is that you won’t be able to pay your bills. And of course there is the cost of health insurance. How would you ever manage that you ask yourself? Well, let me put some of your fears to rest.
1. Quitting Your Job
If you’re being honest with yourself, few people can really say they have a job they truly love and there is nothing in life they would rather be doing. While quitting your “current” job is likely permanent, it will not cause death. Death is permanent. You can get another job. Okay, in this economy it’s rather challenging to find another job so do something better, create your own source of income – start a business. No, I’m not talking about a Fortune 500 company but something that can make as much or as little as you like. It’s easier than you think!
2. I won’t be able to pay my bills
I won’t be able to pay my bills if I quit my job. Sure you will. By starting your own business before you quit your current employment, or getting the job of your dreams, you will have a source of income. If you were laid off wouldn’t you do some quick downsizing or find ways to eliminate most of your expenses? This is a good time to take inventory of your resources and think about what your options are or how you might reconfigure them. Take charge of your life, be proactive. Live life on your terms.
3. I won’t be able to afford health insurance
I won’t be able to afford health Insurance if I quit. The cost of health insurance is astronomical in the United States, no doubt. But, by living outside the United States there are many places where you can secure very affordable coverage comparable to what you have through your employer? And many of the doctors in places like Panama, Costa Rica, Chile, and other locations were trained in the United States or United Kingdom. Do your research. Health insurance is a necessity but it needn’t cost so much that you have to give up your lifestyle just to afford it.
Tens of thousands of people, most of them less capable than you, leave their jobs every day. It’s neither uncommon nor fatal.
Get Unreasonable and Unambiguous
Tony Robbins, Life Coach, is always telling people to get unreasonable and unambiguous. It’s the unreasonable people who know what they want and end up doing great things. The other 99.9 percent of the population are reasonable and willing to settle for mediocrity. Just think about where the competition is here – there are fewer people at the top right? Are you feeling too insecure? You’re not alone. The key is to never underestimate your capabilities. You’re an amazing person with so much to offer. Just remember, unrealistic goals inspire you and much easier to gain the interest of potential backers or angel investors.
Do You Know What You Want?
Many a false step was made by standing still. -Fortune Cookie.
Many people really don’t know what it is that they want. They go through the motions of life but they don’t really stop to think about all the possibilities that they could do, be, enjoy, or share with others. Don’t let that be you. Awaken your spirit, get inspired and excited about life, about living the life others only dream about. Think like a child, uninhibited, aim for the moon. Don’t let the shackles of material thing and emotions hold you back from truly indulging in living your fantasies.
Believe in yourself. You can do it!
