We talked about thinking, being and giving love during the holiday season. More than anything, we all want to be loved. A desire to be emotionally loved is what motivates the overachiever, the bully and the co-dependent. We all want acknowledgement and recognition but more than anything, we want emotional love.
Unfortunately, many of us walk around with an empty love tank and so we don’t have the reserves we need to handle the challenges that every relationship presents.
The next two posts are about The 5 Love Languages* and how you can use them to enhance your relationships.
When our love tank is filled, when we feel really loved by the people that are important to us, the world looks brighter and we can navigate difficulties and differences in a positive way. On an empty love tank, hard conversations become confrontations that end in blaming, accusation and slander.
There are 5 main ‘languages’ of love:
- Words of affirmation
- Quality time
- Acts of service
- Physical affection
- Gifts
Of course we feel loved when we receive any of these languages, but we each have a primary love language. Each of us feels especially loved when spoken to in our primary love language. Over the next few days we will look at each language and the value of understanding your own and your loved ones primary love language in order to have a healthier more powerful relationship with them.
*Gary Chapman is the author of a series of books on The 5 Love Languages
Is your love tank filled by your partner, children and family? If not, how does an ’empty’ tank affect your ability to give love and to handle conflicts within your relationships? We want to hear from you.
