“If you want to be happy, put your effort into controlling the sail, not the wind.”
We so often try to control our outer circumstances to create happiness; a change in location, job, relationship. Yet this seldom works. Yes, in the beginning there is the thrill of the newness of it all and things seem so much better. But once you settle into a routine, often times the same issues arise in your work or relationship and you are right back where you started.
If you find yourself asking, “why does this always happen to me?”, then you need to take another look at the one common element, you. In 12 step programs they say that happiness is an ‘inside job’. It is not until we stop and look at our part in our unpleasant circumstances that we can begin the AAA process of becoming Aware of our behavior, begin to Accept responsibility and fnally take Action to change.
What has your experience been with trying to control the wind in your life?
