Find Your Authenticity: To Thine Own Self Be True

Authentic Find Authenticity

By Karen Basmagy

One of the wonderful things about my career choice is witnessing clients becoming more authentically themselves, usually after periods of great pain, loss and change. They come to the coaching relationship “stuck” and without a real sense of direction or plan, or feel consumed by their emotions.  Within a very short time, they are moving themselves forward, creating a vision and taking steps towards creating a new reality for themselves.

For many, it is the first time in their adult lives that they are truly exploring what makes them happy, what gives them joy, and where they have compromised their values or perhaps lost parts of themselves along life’s path.

Witnessing a client tapping into the deepest parts of themselves is one of the most rewarding aspects of my profession. Coaches are all about high potential living, and in order to live to your highest potential you must sometimes examine your inner world, shedding the values and beliefs imposed on you in your past and by your inner critic.

But just whose voice is the inner critic?

Oftentimes people push down the greatest parts of themselves in order to conform unconsciously to another’s ideals. Perhaps it was their parents’ ideas about how their lives should look, or an ex-partner who held them down, or trying to live up to societal norms. Only after careful and honest self-examination are clients’ able to develop a deep awareness, many times exclusively through the coaching process.  How wonderful to see a client begin to get reacquainted with their truest selves, their “Who”. For many it seems like they are meeting themselves for the first time in a very long time.

Full potential living is not only about achieving personal external goals. It is, at its’ core, about understanding who you are, what is most important to you (Core Values).  It is about realizing and challenging those limiting beliefs or thoughts that have been holding you back.

Like watching a flower garden bloom, bearing witness to a client’s personal and inner growth is like food for my own soul. Once self-awareness is unleashed, my clients are forever changed, and I can see them opening up and growing into to all the wonderful individuals that they are.

How well do YOU know the face in the mirror?
