Choreographing Our Lives

By Karen McMahon

A few years back I decided that my birthday was a more apt time to create my ‘new year’ resolution and began a process of reviewing, assessing and planning that has become an annual ritual for me.

Each year around this time I sit down and take an objective view of my life.  First I categorize my life into each area that I am interested in progressing in:  spiritually in both my studies and my walk; emotionally through my family, social and romantic relationships; professionally in the growth and direction of my business; financially in my perspective, debt resolution and savings goals; intellectually in the books, music and culture I aspire to learn about and experience; and physically in my health and level of consistent activity.

It is always interesting to see where I was a year ago.  The goals that were accomplished and those that no longer make the cut, the growth that was hoped for and the shift in priorities that occurred. I find it a wonderful way to honor my changing life, embrace the opportunities to grow and delight in the 20/20 hindsight in which I notice the unexpected landscape of twists and turns that the past year’s journey offered.

As exciting is choreographing the upcoming year; setting new priorities and goals, considering my hopes and aspirations and knowing that my best laid plans will face life’s challenges and unexpected occurrences and again, look somewhat different on the other end.

I challenge you to choreograph your life.

Keep in mind the key four quadrants of our lives: physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.  Where are you and where do you want to be a year from now.  Notice what was important to you a year ago that may no longer be so.  What has taken its place?  Where have you grown and where are you stuck?

Create a 365 Day Plan to address every aspect of your life.  It needn’t all get done.  Simply the exercise of looking at your life and considering all the possibilities will create its own rewards.  From that vantage point, consider your next steps.

We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on choreographing your life.
