Action: The Third Step in the Journey Toward Peace

To read about the first two steps, begin here...

Step 1:  Awareness - The first step in becoming conscious of our role in every upset is awareness.  It is the beginning of witnessing our own perspectives and behaviors…the practice of ‘mindfulness’.

Step 2:  Acceptance - Realizing that we have a part in all our circumstances and choosing to take responsibility for our part.  It is also accepting people for who they are and accepting circumstances for what they are.

Action is about boldly stepping out of our comfort zone and the way we have been ‘Being’ that has not honored our intentions; implementing new perspectives, beliefs and behaviors and trusting in the unfolding.

We have been working on being mindful and have become aware of the ‘story’ we tell ourselves in every circumstance. With new awareness, we notice when our perspective affects the way we feel.  Keeping our focus on our part in every upset, we begin to take responsibility for both our perspective and behavior.

Now it is time to ACT, a vital part to experience change.  It’s uncomfortable, scary and often awkward.  This is where we can get stuck!

Action Divorce Support

When I first moved out of my ‘marital residence’ and signed a lease, I had no idea how I was going to cover my monthly rent and bills. I was anxious and deeply afraid of failing.  I was completely uncomfortable yet I choose to ACT AS IF.

When I went on my first date post divorce, I felt incredibly awkward, much like my teenage self some 35 years earlier.  I felt insecure and painfully nervous.  I went out anyway.

When I began my career as a Life Coach and had to introduce myself as such it was hard to say the words.   For the first few months, I felt incredibly self-conscious and ill at ease.

Yet, with each stepping out of my comfort zone I realized that I was enough...capable enough, attractive enough, skilled enough and strong enough.  I realized that I WAS WORTHY.

Taking action is never easy.  Personal growth is often accompanied by it’s sidekicks: fear, uncertainty and discomfort.

If we are parents, we have stood beside our child while they experienced their ‘firsts’ with fear and trepidation…first day on the school bus, advancing from tricycle to bicycle, their first date; moving away to college.  All of our growth is accompanied by un-easi-ness.

We feel uncomfortable...

we do it anyway...

…and we grow!

Begin moving out of your comfort zone and enjoying the bliss of overcoming your fears and experiencing a new level of personal growth!

5 Simple Steps into Action:

  1. Set an intention.  Imagine having already successfully acted!  How do you feel?  How has it impacted your confidence?  How has it brought you closer to your ultimate goal?

  2. Have support.  You want a person or group of people who reflect back to you your strength and ability.  Support that encourages and lifts you up.

  3. Face your fears.  Ask yourself, “How true is that?” and “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” and “How true is that?”

  4. Take initial steps.  If you are not yet ready to act, can you do research, talk to people, write about it.

  5. Know what you need.  What do you need to feel more comfortable about acting?  Is it information, affirmation, clarification?  Is it emotional support, financial support?
